It has grown in size over the years and is popular with expats and surfers, but has managed to avoid huge development and all-inclusive resorts. Puerto Escondido is very spread out with a series of beaches stretched along the coastline.

The surf beach Zicatela is the longest, and there are a number of smaller beaches closer to the centre of town. Playa del Carmen was more walkable and had better infrastructure like faster WiFi and a cinema, and San Pancho is much smaller with a magical charm.

We spent a month in Puerto Escondido from the end of January These were our monthly expenses in USD for two people:. As always we tracked our expenses in our travel budgeting app Trail Wallet. Here are the total costs for the month in the three currencies we used: British pounds, US dollars, and Mexican pesos. Each currency is shown in a different Trail Wallet theme.

For the daily average of each category see the Trail Wallet screenshots below. Accommodation was our biggest problem in Puerto Escondido. Apartment rentals in Mexico are cheaper if you turn up and look around rather than booking online.

But we made the mistake of arriving in January which is peak season—everything was booked up and prices were much higher than we expected.

A few days before we arrived I contacted a number of Puerto Escondido real estate agents to see what was available and arranged viewings for our first day in town. In the meantime, we stayed at Hotel Las Olas , a simple but decent and central option on the main Zicatela strip. Luckily our friends Tom and Jenny were also looking for a place so we were able to share the two bedroom house. For short term rentals I recommend looking on Airbnb.

This works best if you book in advance as in peak season all the reasonably priced options were booked up. I would not recommend trying to find a rental in Mexican beach towns from December to February. It was a very quiet area but felt a bit isolated as we were a minute walk down a steep hill to La Punta beach and around an hour walk to the centre. We liked La Punta neighbourhood with its sandy streets and laid-back vibe, much quieter than the main Zicatela strip La Punta is at the far end of Zicatela, furthest from the town centre.

In total we ate out 11 times in the month, usually for lunch. We bought our fruit, vegetables, beans, spices, nuts, and seeds here. We bought wholemeal bread, cheese, nuts, brown rice, and vegan bliss balls from Moringa, a surprisingly good health food shop attached to the Frutas y Verduras hostel in La Punta. As we were so far from the centre we had to use transport to get to most places.

Our main forms of entertainment were relaxing in our pool and watching the sunset from our roof, which cost nothing. Simon also has a category for apps and games that he buys online. Our rooftop digital nomad office. We only managed to stick to this budget by sharing a house—on our own we would have struggled to find affordable accommodation. You could keep costs down by renting for a longer period of time and arriving early or late in the season to get the best deals.

Mango rum cocktails with our housemates in our pool. Releasing a baby turtle! Mmm Puerto Escondido does have a movie theater.

Welcome to the Motel Mediteran Escondido CA

In fact, I have a reservation in Michigan this coming week. My original reservation was cancelled by mistake. But enterprise went out of their way to find me another vehicle. It was even better than the one I booked and a little cheaper. They had trouble locating our reservation, but eventually got it right.

I got there they were all ready for me. It took me less then 2 minutes to do the paper work and in total 5 minutes to get keys and drive away! The car was Perfect! Comfortable and Nice Cons: Rental met expectations Pros: There were no surprises, no presssure for upgrade or add ons.

Reservation was done a day in advance and there were vehicles available to pick. Nice, a bit pushy. The individual who rented me the car was polite and helpful, but was too pushy for me to get their insurance. He spent 15 minutes trying to convince me to get even the basic package. Not sure if this was a faulty gas Guage or what the situation was. Great customer service Pros: As a reward for my patience and a little Xmas present, they upgraded me from a bottom-of-the-line tiny car to a massive SUV for no additional costs.

It was such a huge help having the extra room for our luggage and Xmas gifts. The office was observing holiday hours that were not reflected on Kayak. My reservation was for noon but the office was closing at noon on Xmas eve.

I was the second to last customer served and JUST made it on time. There were people after me who also had reservations for noon and were turned away.

Kayak should keep up to date with special office hours. Car rental the way it should be After making the reservation online in my name, my husband was able to pick it up without me, no problem state law here in CA says spouses can do stuff like that. He said the process was very smooth, only 2 issues being that 1.

They were super busy day after Christmas so he had to wait quite awhile for them to bring out the car, and 2. They gave it to us with only half a tank of gas. They marked it appropriately on the papers, but I have never had that happen before, anywhere.

Nonetheless the car was the model we requested online, clean and without issues, and it performed flawlessly. Then upon return, we had a very pleasant surprise: Enterprise said that we were a bit early and actually qualified to knock off a day from our reservation! I have never had THAT happen before either! Great prompt service but missed a couple key thing Pros: Great car, picked me up, everyone is very polite.

Unintentional insurance charge was refunded upon my request. I was charged for the insurance when I did not sign up for it, and when I mentioned having to Uber somewhere from the Enterprise location, nobody mentioned they could just drop me off until my ride was there! I saw Kayak was still sending me confirmation info. Need a new customer service dept!! Good experience and value Pros: Check in and out was fast, car in good condition Cons: Car was not washed which made the view out the back window difficult.

Got a nice upgrade. Pricing is very competitive. Pick-up costed a bit more time than anticipated; drop off was within 1 minute!

One person doing paperwork while a line is waiting. Metcalf location easy pick up and return great staff good price the Ford fusion we had got 42 miles per gallon. Jordan took the time to provide a car for me although they were sold out and no longer accepting applications. He was very attentive and supportive as to my credit card situation.

He worked with me and overall was awesome in assisting me. Well, I was charged double the rental agreement!!! I returned the car and when I was checking out, the attendant gave me the final chargeable amount. I am appalled that the rate was more than doubled.

It was very small but more expensive than the previous car. All the scratches made me nervous Pros: Easy reservation online Able to tweek the hours to get the best deal - I was going to rent for 48 hours but after tweaking the return time, I figured I can rent extra 4 hours for the almost same price.

All the scratches already present on the car made me nervous about whether Hertz would blame me for any of those to me when I returned the car. Pictures were taken but still worried me. Parking is a bit rough and tight- but the service as awesome.

The young man who tended to us was excellent with his customer service Cons: In the meantime, we stayed at Hotel Las Olas , a simple but decent and central option on the main Zicatela strip. Luckily our friends Tom and Jenny were also looking for a place so we were able to share the two bedroom house. For short term rentals I recommend looking on Airbnb.
