Titan's new volume of Flash Gordon strips is a beautiful but flaws edition still deserving of 5 stars for the quality of the product. These long neglected run is just as brilliant as it's predecessors with for the most part better writing from Science Fiction writer Harry Harrison and Dan Barry himself who took over the writing.

The book is flawlessly made with a sturdy cover, sewn binding and good color restoration. The publishers flaw is in trying to keep this volume in matching size of the two previous daily Dan Barry collections. In doing so we have to cope with smaller size reproduction then we should have had and lots of wasted white space. The book should real have made just a little bit bigger and let the art fit closer to the edges.

Still I think it is very readable and the book is in the landscape format wider then tall and any flaws in the source comics such as bleed over has been computer corrected to look it's best. The strips are all uniform three tiers with a Flash Gordon logo in the upper left hand panel except for two Sundays. Of these one is sadly the 2 tier strip which is missing the top row. The other has no logo but still 3 tiers. The art for this Sunday is actually in a bigger size then the others.

But since it fits the page I was wondering if maybe the sides have been truncated. Next we get an interview with Bob Fujitani who started helping out around the time of this volume when Dan Barry also took over the Sunday strip. Fujitani started out only inking Barry but eventually became the main artist for the strip working on Barry scripts while Barry pursued other interests and even spent a year in jail.

Fujitani style is almost impossible to separate out from Barry's own art. We also get an index of all the Barry Sundays not just the 10 reproduced here. It is worth mentioning that this volume has an entirely diffferent cover then the one pictured. Both the upper and lower images are different but it still mimics the style of the previous Dan Barry volumes.

I will try to include a photo of the actual book cover below. This story is almost entirely illustrated by Mac Raboy. When Raboy took ill Dan Barry was pressed to take over the art. This story is set on the colonized planet Mars where the Chameleon is hiding among the traveling circus performers.

What I enjoyed most about this strip is the heroes don't succeed and end up abandoning Pluto. The world is only populated by robots including one who calls himself The Master. Flying cars, giant insects and disappearing people are a few of the things happening. Of course it is only a bunch of bug like aliens with a machine called the Warper. We find out that there are both good and bad bug aliens. While these stories may seem a little campy now over 45 years later. They where based on more Science then the prior fantasy like runs.

I find them a pure delight to read and this volume a "must own'. To begin, I am a fan of Flash Gordon. So, of course, I wanted this book which began reprinting the Sundays where the Dark Horse collection of Mac Raboy's work on the Sunday strip ended. With Raboy's sudden death, Dan Barry, who had been drawing the Flash Gordon daily strip, took over the Sunday as well.

On the plus side of this volume - it is a nice hardback with a solid introduction and an illuminating interview with Bob Fujitani who assisted on the strip for years. Well, to be fair, he actually drew it alone for years. My hesitation in giving it more than three stars is the reproduction of the actual strips. I am sure that Titan wanted to keep the format they used to reprint the dailies the same for the Sunday reprints. However that meant a larger image had to fit in in the same space. As such, the strips are pretty small and not all that easy to read.

They were reprinted in color which I think obscured some of the detail of the art; for me, that is one of the main reasons to get the book.

If I had my "druthers" I would have just chosen to make the strips readable as opposed to following a set format. And curiously even the strips by Raboy in the early part of the book had Barry's name on them.

I own the original art for one of those strips and Barry's name is not on it as reproduced. I still recommend the book because it has been years since I read these stories.

I would just have liked them to be larger and more easy to read. The sundays are printed with lots of white page area on top and bottom. They could have formatted the book the better match the rectangular shape of the sundays, and it would have looked like less o a joke.

But it would still be a flawed product. Coach Lad is a father figure to some, an iconic presence to others and a mentor to all.
