Updated March 18, Tasmania's ambulance service has attended 11 callouts to the small southern town of Maydena since the beginning of the year, coinciding with the opening of a "gravity-focused" mountain biking park.
The new attraction opened in late January and has been drawing plenty of keen riders, with the bulk of its reviews on a social media page being five-star raves.
I'm okay, I'm not okay, but I'm okay', and I just remember feeling sick. She said he almost cancelled his ride because it had been raining heavily for the days prior, but the business does not offer refunds or booking changes within 72 hours. On arrival, he could see people coming off the track that were completely caked in mud," she said.
On the second time down the track, Jo's husband came off the bike in the first section and hurtled straight into a tree. In a statement, Maydena Bike Park manager Simon French said their safety team reviews all accidents, and no modifications had been made to the tracks.
Mr French said operators worked closely with the Department of Health and Human Services and private medical consultants to develop a "comprehensive" emergency management and safety system.
That included using professional trail design and construction services, developing a comprehensive sign-in and waiver system for guests, and implementing a signage system to display trail difficulty ratings, the rider responsibility code and to call for extensive caution.
The park has a full-time medical team with a trained paramedic as safety manager, and a volunteer patrol service to supplement the paid time. Core staff have also been given wilderness first aid training. Emergency access roads have been developed to provide access to different parts of the park and Mr French said helicopter extraction points have been developed and GPS-referenced.
Maydena Bike Park also offers bike and safety equipment for hire for guests that do not have the appropriate equipment with them and offers "guiding and bike school products" that beginner riders and first-time visitors are prompted to use. By now I have well and truly relaxed the tight grip. Scandinavia meets the end of the blue trail, Colour Blind where there is a gigantic tree and a nice spot for an interlude. How awesome would it be to have this only a drive away! From Perth, we travelled two flights and a car ride for the better part of a day. That first run was a fairly big deal for me and it felt great to accomplish it. Lunch beckons and I set the bike down on the way to canteen, the menu looks substantially great so we order a Wallaby pizza and brown rice salad.
Up we go again along the gravel road and without the nerves this time. In the afternoon the mud prevails on the top section of the mountain. I take a steady pace down, not willing to push it. The berms on this trail are epic to me and there are so many of them.
I stop a few times and hike the bike before reaching a fire track road. I decide to head down and have a beer. We both define this as living the good life. At the end of our trip, we were genuinely sad to leave, we felt we had more riding in us and came to the conclusion we would like to return for a longer trip. There is no denying that because of the facilities available to us at Maydena Bike Park we were able to get the most out of our mountain biking days and really push ourselves. We probably would have camped out at base just to be able to ride at dawn and squeeze in more rides!
At the same time, if we wanted to chill we had the options of hanging out in the hub or going to the top of the summit where there is also a place to eat and drink, a fire in winter too! We found the network of trails was easy to navigate thanks to regular signage. Sticking to green and a few not all blue trails I was able to roll over the trail at my own speed. Derek who has a penchant for fast jumps, was in his element and this is really what the bike park does best, is those gravity trails.
With varying riding skills between the both of us we each individually found adrenaline on these trails! New kitchen appliances, new and great bbq. This house is stylish and spacious with a beautiful view across the valley, especially in Autumn.
Comfortable bed, good shower, open fire, light and beauty. We fell in love with Cadillac Ranch from the moment we entered the grounds.
It is truly magical place with great atmosphere and excellent amenities. Each room is lovingly decorated and you can find everything you need in the house. We will highly recommend this place to anyone who is seeking for proper unplugged holidays. Tom and Sharon's place is amazing! If you're looking to get away for a nice relaxing time - this is the place.
The serenity here is amazing and just to soak in the landscapes and wildlife around you. Close proximity to waterfalls and many walking tracks Mt Field National Park. There's a lot to offer here. Tom and Sharon have a box of food offered for purchase at the house incase you run low on foods.
The heaters were turned on for us making the house toasty on arrival. If you are into astrophotography, this place is a perfect setup for it. Highly recommend this place and will be back hopefully sooner than later!! Great location at the entrance to Mount feild National Park. Washing machine and dryer were great. The location is amazing- being able to stroll into the National Park.
It's such an incredible place , esp the Waterfalls. The unit was very tired, worn and old. It is not modern like the pictures depict. We were disappointed with the unit. The cottage is at a superb location! Its right before the entrance of the Mt Field National Park. The house was spacious and clean, so we had a really comfortable stay. Vicky's apartment was located right at the entrance of Mt.
Field National Park - it was awesome! There is a lovely creek behind the cottages and you are able to view stars very clearly on a cloudless night. We arrived really late so Vicky had left the keys for us in a safe box outside the cottage, which made our check in very seamless. Also was able to see some wild nocturnal animals not too sure what they were whilst star gazing.
Vicky is extremely responsive and attentive to our needs. Had a lot of fun exploring Mt. Fantastic hospitality, we arrived late in the day and the host had put on the Heater and electric blankets for us. Close to some fantastic walks and waterfalls. Clean, comfortable accommodation unit ideally situated to enable appreciation of the national park and environs by day and by night.
The property is in a fantastic location, just outside the entry to the National Park and all its walks. We loved walking straight to the falls and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The property has all the basics needed, is very clean and Leesa was a welcoming kind host.
Well stocked cottage with all your needs. Our daughter loved the board games there. Fantastic views across to the snow capped mountains. A very cosy space. Lovely cozy cabin, great setting, comfortable beds and nice hot showers. Easy to work in kitchen and comfortable lounge area to relax in at night.
Beautiful views in the morning from the bedroom windows and deck. One highlight was hand feeding the resident possum bread and apple. This cabin is very close to Mt Field National Park and many beautiful areas.
We will definitely be booking again when we travel to Tasmania again. A nice cosy cottage, located in a beautiful garden. The lady owning it is very friendly and provides a sample of her homemade jam for breakfast. The Berryfield cabin at Westerway far exceeded my expectations. The photos don't do it justice. It is a cosy very comfortable cabin that is much brighter than the photos let on. The garden and views are remarkable. Annette was friendly and gracious. Wifi is available and reliable, just not in the cabin itself.
We would return for a longer stay should we ever return to Tasmania. We have been 10 days in Tasmania, the four nights at Duffy's have been memorable, but really memorable! They will be one of our beautiful memories to keep in our hearts. Annette and Desmond have been two perfect hosts, and they run the place with care and love, you can feel it once you are there, it is not just the beautiful location, every detail has their imprint.
We have been lucky to be "upgraded" to the cottage, which can actually fit at least five people very, very comfortable, so it was an unexpected luxury, but we saw also what they call the "Cabin" which is a self contained studio suite and that would rival any luxury hotel room. It is so energising, it is peaceful, it is a piece of paradise on Earth. If we could chose this place to live, we would. Annette and Desmond, have been very helpful in providing us with information, buying for us some food which we enjoyed cooking, sharing with us a glass of wine and so much more, it is a place full of pleasant surprises.
Stay there and you will not want to leave! The Cabins here are really comfortable, well appointed and sparkling clean! Annette has thought of everything the guests needs. Extremely comfortable beds and lounge chairs. Loved having our morning cuppa on the verandah warmed by the morning sun overlooking the magnificent garden and countryside. Truly a pleasure to stay here! Perfectly located for some hiking in Mt Field National Park, or exploring the area, the cottage is very clean, quiet, surrounded by a wonderful garden, and has a super comfortable bed!
Great little place and only 1km from the Maydena bike park! The rooms are comfy and cosy and it is just a nice place to relax and chill out after a day of riding! Excellent hospitality, super friendly hosts and a a great location super close to Maydena bike park. Matt was welcoming and pleasant to chat with. We only stayed one night and did not get to meet Matt and Cheryl as they were away. However, their stand-in Kelly was delightful, charming and very helpful.
The cooked breakfast was a welcome bonus. The house is spacious and well located for travel to Mt Field and Lake Pedder. Would definitely stay there again. The perfect base for an MTB adventure. A delightfully cosy country escape with all the comforts and plenty of character. Linda and Yanni were lovely hosts. Interaction with the alpacas was a highlight. They are very warm and welcoming and there are thoughtful touches all over the house. They left us farm fresh eggs for breakfast, chocolates and even some port wine!
We wish we had planned to stay longer. This cottage is a dream find. I would heartily recommend staying here. The views are amazing and the cottage is clean and inviting. The experience we had there was absolutely amazing. Firstly, communication was easy. Linda was so gracious and allowed us to check in early so that I could rest whilst the rest of the family went on to visit the sights around the area. Their place is cosy, with a nice fire place and heaters to keep us warm, well equipped and beds which were so comfortable.
It is like a home away from home. A breakfast basket was also provided which was a very nice touch. Though we did not have children in our party, I would think it is a place that would be good for families with children as there were some alpacas and a pony on the farm, which you could feed. I would definitely recommend anyone considering to stay there to book it! Our only regret was not staying there longer! Thank you Linda and Yanni for a terrific stay at Posthouse.
Your thoughtful touches throughout the place were so appreciated and this is definitely the most wonderful Airbnb experience we have had. Would love to come back again soon. The Post House is a fantastic air bnb.
Really comfy beds and great shower. Hilarious pony and ram to entertain the kids. Every little thing you can think of is available. Photos do not do it justice, totally recommend! Their breakfast basket is superb, Feeding their resident pony Pepper is a treat and the fireplace creates the perfect atmosphere for a cozy country cottage get away. We'll be back again! We spent a wonderful night at Linda's and Yanni's place and can definitely recommend to spend one night in their beautiful and cozy Cottage with Shetland Pony!!
