If you recall, under the guidance of Steam teacher, Beth Topinka and co-advisor teacher, Jennifer Modula, 19 children in the Problem Solvers Club, which includes grades th, took on a challenge. After brainstorming on a variety of problems facing Millstone Township, they settled on an invasive species of plants that the 5th grade was already doing research on.
Due to their relentless efforts to make an impact by eradicating a target patch of invasive Phragmites Australis in Millstone, they placed first in the Junior Division at the State Bowl Competition held on March 11th at Kean University. The children have been very busy given presentations about their findings to the Millstone Township Environmental Committee, local scout troops, and to the rest of the classes in school. They even got a visitor from the Monmouth County Park System to come and speak with them about the invasive species.
The students worked especially hard to be invited to the NJ State Bowl and to come out in first place in the Junior Division just shows how much devotion and time they put into this project.
