Mark Sargeant, famous for the wonderful Rocksalt in Folkestone, is no cheap name. The site, in Soho, could certainly take an ambitious establishment. And yet this feels innocuous. Its name is affixed to the windows with a sticker, its wall art — photos of Mind the Gap signs and phone boxes — could have been bought from a tourist shop on Trafalgar Square.

The upstairs dining room, where we sat, looks like a hotel breakfast room. Cumin roast quail and caramelised onion tart starters, rib of beef and Romney Marsh lamb mains: The ravioli was one big parcel, and the crab rather stiff; he wondered, in fact, whether it had been bound with a little egg. I had the miso-glazed Cornish mackerel on top of shredded lettuce with an oyster dressing, and the whole thing was pretty simple and extremely good.

The fish was fresh, the miso understated; the oyster dressing had a tarragon topnote and was compelling. A wee king prawn in a crunchy noodle nest was quite festive and salty, like an incredibly posh crisp with a filling. Then I had the fillet of cod with black rice, chorizo, courgette and baby squid, and here my interest wandered.

The fish was flour-dusted and looked attractive for it. It was fresh, and it was cooked for the right amount of time; but beyond that, it was all a bit too obvious. The baby squid was fine, the rice was a bit dry and nubbly. It did not seem like a dish born of passion.

There was no faulting the quality of the lamb in either cut, and the whole thing was tasty enough. Nobody cooks like this any more. It tastes of salt and skeleton. The puddings were a little more seasonal, and I had the blackberry and lemon mess with pistachio cake. The mess was actually very elegant, and these fruits make a terrific innovation. The cake was as good as sugar-free, so far as I could tell: B had the gypsy tart, an accomplished pastry base filled with something the exact colour and consistency of butterscotch Angel Delight, but which tasted of treacle instead.

It had a chic dollop of clotted cream alongside, and worked pretty well. The service is sweet. This Scottish-Italian delicatessen and wine merchant is still going strong after 81 years. There are too many cakes and pastries to tempt, not to mention juices, jams and just-baked loaves to take home.
