Grand Canyon National Park — The National Parks Girl

Why is the park separated into South and North Rims? A mile long km canyon separates the park into South and North Rims. The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River is a mile-deep, 1. Scenery, climate and vegetation are noticably different between north and south rims because of differences in elevation.

It is almost like having two parks in one and it takes time, planning and effort to be able to visit both sides of the Canyon in one trip. The South Rim has an airport and rail service and is a 90 minute drive from Interstate 40 and the transportation centers of Williams and Flagstaff , Arizona.

A larger city with a major airport, Phoenix, Arizona , is also on this side of the canyon, and is approximately a four hour drive. South Rim Visitor Center: Scroll down for approximate driving distances. Click on map above to download it. It was a very nice October day mids when we started out, with just a little wind at the top of the trailhead.

But the further we got down into the canyon, the more the temperature rose, and by the time we reached the resthouse it was 70 degrees. It only took us a little over an hour to reach our destination, and we would have liked to continue onward, but we wanted to make sure we made it to Shoshone Point for sunset highly recommended.

We did see a male Desert Big Horn Sheep right in the middle of the trail, which was really neat, but also somewhat terrifying, as he looked as if he was about to charge us. We moved aside and before we could snag a picture, he disappeared down the mountain. This was a fairly easy trail with magnificent views of the canyon throughout. The only reason I gave it a 4 out of 5 stars is because of all the people on the trail. We must have seen at least people on our trek, which unfortunately takes away from the majesty of the canyon.

Still an amazing hike nevertheless! I highly overestimated my water to carry there are water spouts every 1. You will be burning a lot of calories, so carry the necessary food to replace that energy before you've used it all.

This is especially true for the hike out, which is a huge calorie-burn due to the elevation gain. This is the longest "recommended" day hike in Grand Canyon, however I was able to complete in and back in six hours as a relatively in-shape person.

Hiking into and out of the canyon is about knowing your body: As long as you prepare and wear plenty of sunscreen, you will have an amazing time! Expect to spend time marveling at the canyon and Colorado River from the plateau! It was definitely a bucket list type of trip. Both were difficult for their own reasons. Going down was very hard on the knees. Be wary about which leg you are leading with because you'll overuse one or the other.

I ended up straining something in my left knee after the 4, ft descent. Going back up was it's own challenge. The first half until just past Indian Gardens was pretty easy. The distance from Three Mile Resthouse to the end is a grindy uphill battle. There was probably a 30F temp swing from PR to the trail head. Make sure to keep your food and water intake up. We finished the ascent in just under 5. Stressful, but very rewarding. You have really no idea what the Grand Canyon holds until you are fortunate enough to explore the bottom.

Doable in a single day - it's practical to go back because of transport. I did it in It's smart to leave before sunrise. Think about bringing water, not every water source was open when I went. Anyway, it's a great hike. Going down the canyon is THE thing to do over there. Hiking on the rim isn't the same - you'll get the full experience of the size of the canyon! Also, if you have to choose south rim vs north rim I'd vote for south rim because it's closer to the colorado river.

You also have more decent choices hermit, britgth angel, tanner. Very doable in a single day if you are fit, however think about starting before sunrise - it's not just for the time, but also for the heat. Everytime, I've reached phantom ranch around 10AM, which is smart. Transport might be complicated, but otherwise go for it! You can do several days, but you need permits for camping.

Going down the canyon is by far the best. The thing is that the north rim is so far, it's hard to reach. That's a good start.
