Music promoter Keiron Campbell Black wins Guaranteed Irish Music Hero award
Music promoter Keiron Campbell Black was today named as the Guaranteed Irish Music Hero. The Dublin-based promoter, musician and venue proprietor was selected for the accolade following a public nomination process.
Mr. Black is a well-known and much-loved figure on the Irish music scene, having introduced acts ranging from The Hot Sprockets to Gavin James. As a songwriter and musician, he played in The Amazing Few and Sack; organised and promoted gigs with Whelan’s, Electric Picnic and many more. Most recently he began running the East Side Tavern bar and music venue on Dublin’s Leeson Street.
Guaranteed Irish Championing Exceptional Individuals
Throughout 2017, Guaranteed Irish is championing exceptional individuals who have demonstrated a commitment to creating a better Ireland in their respective sectors.
Keiron Campbell Black is the fourth of six Guaranteed Irish Heroes to be awarded. Artist Maser; former Women’s Rugby Captain, Niamh Briggs; and Professor Louise Kenny were previously named Guaranteed Irish Heroes for art, sport and science respectively. The remaining two Guaranteed Irish Heroes will be awarded for technology and food later this year.
Speaking today, CEO of Guaranteed Irish Brid O'Connell said: “Keiron Campbell Black is a true champion of Ireland’s music scene, so it is with great pleasure we name him as the very first Guaranteed Irish Music Hero. We received many outstanding nominations from the public, but Keiron had by far the strongest support and was the clear winner of the Guaranteed Irish Music Hero award.
“For the best part of two decades, he has supported the creation and promotion of new music in Ireland. As a songwriter and musician, he played in The Amazing Few and Sack. As promoter for the Mercantile Group for over a decade, he has booked the first gigs for bands like The Hot Sprockets, Red Kid, Gavin James and The Raglans at venues such as Whelan’s, The Mercantile and Opium Rooms.
“Keiron not only promotes rock bands and singer/songwriters, but pushes boundaries, searching out unusual acts and curating specialist subculture events. These festivals and themed nights have brought unexpected styles of music to the masses, broadening perceptions of what can be expected from music in Ireland. It is because of his tireless commitment to the Irish music scene that he has been awarded this accolade. I would like to wish Keiron the very best for the future.”
On receiving the Guaranteed Irish Hero Award for Music, Keiron Campbell Black said: “I am thrilled and honoured to be the Guaranteed Irish Music Hero. As the music scene in Ireland continues to grow from strength to strength, it is amazing that the industry is being recognised in this way.
“I’m passionate about music in Ireland and this award would not have been possible without the thousands of people across the country that I have worked with and collaborated with along the way. They make up the fabric that is Ireland’s music scene and I’d like to accept this award on behalf of them also.”
The next Guaranteed Irish Hero will be announced in November for their contribution to technology. Launching the call for the Guaranteed Irish Technology Hero, Brid O’Connell said: "This award is a great opportunity to commend someone who you consider to be a Guaranteed Irish Technology Hero. Ireland has truly become a digital island, and we believe it is time to champion Irish contributions to technology. What better way to do that than to nominate a Guaranteed Irish Technology Hero?
“We're calling on businesses and individuals to get involved and put forward names of anyone who has demonstrated a real commitment to creating a better Ireland with technology through: jobs, community and provenance. If you know someone who fits that bill, then we want to hear from you.” concluded Brid O’Connell.
