€50,000 awarded under BAI Media Research Funding Scheme

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) has announced the award of funding totalling €50,000 to three applicants under its Media Research Funding Scheme 2016.

The Scheme provides funding to academics, researchers and media professionals to conduct media-related research on topical issues pertaining to the broadcasting industry. It aims to inform debate on broadcasting-related matters, with a view to facilitating informed, evidence-based decision-making.

The BAI received 11 applications under the scheme, requesting a total amount of funding of just under €235,000. Three projects were selected by the adjudicating panel and have been offered total funding of €50,000, the maximum amount available under this year’s scheme. All projects in receipt of funding are subject to the successful conclusion of contract negotiations. The successful projects are:

· Co-locational Learning of Irish Phrases through Sport/Foghlaim Comhlogaíochta de Fhrásaí Gaeilge trí Mheán an Spóirt: a project aimed at developing best practice guidelines and practical advice for broadcasters in the sports domain, in the use of Irish language. This project is a collaboration between Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) and the production company Nemeton TV. It will be headed by Dr Chris Mulhall from WIT’s School of Humanities and was awarded €16,900.

· Broadcasting Irish Emigration in the Era of Global Mobility: this project seeks to examine whether current broadcasting strategies have developed to meet the needs of a generation of highly mobile citizens who can no longer be fitted comfortably into the category of diaspora. Diane Negra from University College Dublin (UCD) and Dr Eleanor O’Leary from Institute of Technology Carlow (ITC) will manage the project, which was awarded €10,950.

· Netflix and binge? Exploring new cultures of consumption for non-linear television and online video streaming: This project aims to conduct research into the everyday video consumption habits of Irish audiences through an in-depth qualitative research approach. Headed by Dr Eugenia Siapera, Dublin City University was awarded €22,190 for this piece of research.

Commenting on the announcement, BAI Chief Executive, Michael O’Keeffe, said: “The Media Research Funding Scheme serves an important function in strengthening links between the BAI, third level institutions and the broadcasting sector and we were delighted with the quality of applications received under the current scheme, which was exceptionally high.

“The wide variety of research themes submitted through the application process was particularly welcome and enabled us to provide funding to three highly topical research projects as part of this year’s scheme. We look forward to contract finalisation with each of the successful applicants and to considering the outcomes of each research initiative, in due course.”
