Business and Societal Benefits of Design to be Highlighted at NCAD’s Innovation Day

The business and societal benefits of design will be highlighted at the 2nd Annual National College of Art and Design (NCAD) Innovation Day, taking place today, 17th June from 11am to 3.00pm on the top floor of theSchool of Design for Industry, NCAD, 100 Thomas Street, Dublin 8.Leaders from business, society and academia will come together to discuss how to drive business and social innovation with creative thinking and design.

A number of high-profile industry leaders will speak at the event, including:

· Co-founder of British design company Red or Dead, Wayne Hemingway.

· MD of the creative design and innovation consultancy Dolmen,Sean McNulty.

· Dr Sarah Miller, CEO, Rediscovery Centre, a social enterprise dedicated to providing community employment and training via innovative reuse enterprises focused on new product design.

Keynote speeches will be followed by a panel discussion moderated by Ali Grehan, City Architect, Dublin City Council, which will illustrate how creative thinking is being adopted to achieve innovation in a variety of for-profit and not-for-profit contexts.

Commenting in advance of the event, Derek McGarry, Head of Innovation and Engagement said: “The value of Ireland’s creative industry is growing rapidly and making a significant contribution to the economy. We know that design provides a real opportunity for transformation in business and society, through the creation of new products and services that work towards building a sustainable future and look forward to sharing insights from industry leaders on design value at our 2nd Annual Innovation Day.”

Start-ups currently working at Origin8, NCAD’s centre for commercialisation and innovation, such as Cara Mobility, Obeo and Gazel will exhibit at Innovation Day, in addition to exhibits highlighting industry collaborations underway at Origin8.
