The NASDAQ Stock Market Opening Bell will be rung onstage at the RDS during the Web Summit on October 30th, marking it the first time The NASDAQ Stock Market has been opened from Ireland. Typically, bell ceremonies are hosted at the NASDAQ MarketSite in the heart of Times Square, New York City and Remote Opening and Closing Bell ceremonies, such as this are extremely rare. NASDAQ is the world’s leading public market for tech companies.

The NASDAQ Opening Bell will take place in front of a live audience of over 7,000 and will be carried live by dozens of TV stations to a potential audience of millions.

Bringing the Opening Bell to the Web Summit is recognition of the event’s significance to the tech community worldwide. The first 1,000 tickets for this year’s event were snapped up in a matter of hours, proving that Europe is indeed craving its own SXSW. This year, the Web Summit is evolving to become a three-day festival of ideas with over 300 speakers and 7,000 attendees. General tickets go on general sale on May 30th.

Speaking at the launch, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation Richard Bruton T.D. said “The Government’s plans for jobs and growth includes a specific focus on technology, and over 11,000 new jobs have been added in the sector since March 2011. The Web Summit is a great initiative that offers an amazing opportunity for Ireland to show the global technology community what we are doing in this area. I commend Paddy Cosgrave and all involved in putting it together every year, and we in Government are determined to take full advantage of all the opportunities in the technology sector for jobs and growth”.

“For more than 40 years NASDAQ has been dedicated to supporting innovation in all forms and throughout all stages of a company’s development,” said Bruce Aust, Executive Vice President, NASDAQ OMX. “Through this commitment, we have a built a longstanding relationship with Web Summit, which is a key platform for reaching the technology community in Europe and beyond. We are tremendously proud to share in the excitement of the Web Summit and to bring the Opening Bell to Dublin for the first time.”

Over the past three years the Web Summit has grown from humble beginnings in a lecture theatre in Trinity College, to a festival of multiple stages and events attracting thousands of people from across the world. “We’re delighted to see NASDAQ recognizing the Web Summit as the platform for tech companies in Europe. This is an extraordinary coup for us as the opening of the Market is watched by millions and rarely takes place outside of New York” said Web Summit founder Paddy Cosgrave.

October’s summit will feature over 300 speakers including the Niklas Zennstrom, founder of Skype and Atomico; Phil Libin, CEO of the firm behind one of today’s hottest apps - Evernote; Wordpress co-founder Matt Mullenweg; Hailo co-founder Jay Bregman; Eugene Kaspersky of Kaspersky Labs; Rina Onur of Peak Games; soon-to-be-space traveller, WPP board member and tech investor Esther Dyson; as well as Digg founder turned Google Ventures partner Kevin Rose.

Scott Belsky, who sold Behance to Adobe in 2012 for a reputed $150m, well-known Fab, Uber and Blackjet investor Shervin Pishevar and blogger/Google Glass evangelist Robert Scoble will also feature at the Web Summit. Additional speakers will be announced on a rolling basis.

The Web Summit has grown at a phenomenal rate over the past few years. The company behind the event has taken on 30 staff over the past 12 months. Web Summit now has over 40 full-time employees, with events in Dublin, London, Berlin and New York.

More than 5,000 people from outside of Ireland will travel to Dublin for the Web Summit, making the Web Summit the largest tech festival in Europe. More than 1,000 startups are expected at the Summit along with over 350 members of the international press and more than 300 international investors.
