ZeptoLabs and Wonga Win Big At THE EUROPAS - Europe's Startup Oscars.
The Europas, Europe's startup awards, hit Berlin's Postbanhof last night (TUESDAY, January 22nd), with 1,000 guests gathered to celebrate the best of the continent's tech talent. Wonga was named Best Heavyweight Startup after a year that saw the online short-term loans company's profits surge. ZeptoLabs took the Grand Prix with the judges recognising the astounding success of the Cut The Rope creator which hit 300 million downloads without taking any outside investment.
Another gaming firm, Wooga, snatched the People's Choice Award. The Berlin-based social gaming company received its award on home territory. Over 300,000 votes were cast to decide the winner of the award with hundreds of startups vying for the prize.
The Europas creator and curator Mike Butcher, who presented the awards, says: "The Europas were bigger and better this year with over 1000 entries making it a tremendously difficult task for the judges to pick our winners. From recent successes like Sketchfab, to titans of the industry like our Hall of Fame winner Niklas Zennstrom, Europe's very best was on show. The Europas has shown that Europe's start up scene is truly rocking".
The awards judges included partners from Kleiner Perkins, Accel, Index, Google Ventures and Crunchfund, entrepreneurs like Jawed Karim (founder of YouTube and Youniversity Ventures) and Michael Birch (founder of Bebo, Monkey Inferno) and Lady Gaga's manager and angel investor Troy Carter. Journalists from TechCrunch, The NextWeb, VentureBeat, Reuters and some of Europe's leading blogs also took part in the process.
Co-organiser and Web Summit founder Paddy Cosgrave said: “These awards show just how hot European startups are right now. It was fantastic to see so many people from the community together to celebrate the level of innovation and excitement out there."
