Companies can now block porn without filtering safe websites

Paul Walsh, Irish Founder of Metacert, told us today of his new cloud based product from his company Metacert.

MetaCert is today launching the perfect solution for companies like Starbucks, BT, Skype or others who are keen to respond to public sensitivities in the UK about online pornography, particularly where Internet access is being provided in public spaces by WiFi or in some other way.

As a side note, Metacert do not believe in censorship of any kind. But they do support companies who'd like to block this type of content on their premises and do believe ISPs should make it easy for parents to protect their kids online.

Over the past six years MetaCert has been researching and developing its crawling and classification platform and has spent the past 12 months tweaking the crawler-based algorithms to construct the largest database in the world of pornography web sites.

They have catalogued over 645 million web pages, which, between them, contain over 31 billion URLs linking to pornography. Every day they add thousands more URLs. But the real beauty of our offering is that it works through their own DNS service. This means, whether or not they are already deploying existing filtering technology, virtually any type of network can hook into our system without any additional hardware or software and be up and running within hours, not days or weeks.

The biggest problem faced by filtering companies is that practically all of them “overblock”, sometimes on a large scale. This means access to perfectly innocent websites is denied. MetaCert has an error rate of less than 0.3% and, crucially, on average, if any sites are reported as having been miscategorised they will be analysed and if necessary corrected in less than two hours.

With thousands of URLs being classified and labeled every hour, the DNS is automatically updated every 5 minutes.

Our technology is all cloud-based and we have gone to great lengths to provide a solution which can integrate seamlessly to established platforms. I’m really proud of what we have done and it is gratifying that some of the biggest Internet players are looking to integrate MetaCert with their products.

MetaCert recently completed an initial round of funding where a number of Silicon Valley angels invested $740K.

We have an endorsement from Internet Child Safety advocate John Carr
“MetaCert is brilliant. With its gigantic database of pornography, it is by far the most effective solution available on the market for ISPs and companies that provide WiFi or other forms of public access to customers or members of the public.”
