Rehab Group’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure wins Education & Training Technology Award
19 May 2012: At the ICT Excellence Awards 2012, Rehab Group won the ‘Best use of Technology in Education & Training’ award for National Learning Network’s Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) with its technology partner Unity Technology Solutions. The project enables the organisations instructors to provide customised desktops to students based on their individual needs and skills without constraints from computer specification. The awards which were held at the Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire recognise developments and achievements in the technology sector.
National Learning Network, Rehab Group’s training and employment division, provides training to over 5,000 people every year, in 50 locations across the country. In the main, students require a higher level of support in their training due to a disability, mental health issue or other disadvantage. The VDI platform provides an agile environment which can be customised to suit the needs of individual students, and importantly, fully supports a range of software accessibility options.
The VDI was designed to meet the growing need for easy and affordable desktop virtualisation without sacrificing performance. Citrix VDI-in-a-Box provided the solution as it can be deployed quickly on inexpensive servers and delivers high availability without the need for expensive shared storage.
Marie Kelly, Director of Training and Employment Services, Rehab Group, said “We are delighted to win this award as it recognises how technology plays such an integral role in our education and training division. National Learning Network has consistently positioned itself as the leading provider of education, training and vocational skills services to people who are disadvantaged and we need to ensure that the technology needed to support this is of the highest standard. This award illustrates our ability to respond to the needs of our students and the market-place, which is paramount to us. The VDI-in-a-box platform enables our students to have a high speed access to the latest software titles and accessibility tools from within our training centres or from home (distance learning), regardless of the age of their computer equipment. We were delighted to engage with Unity Technology Solutions on the VDI-in-a-Box project.”
